The bit about Lord Peter's income reminded me of the section of A Tree Grow in Brooklyn in which Francie is writing a story about a very rich woman. She spends ages describing the food, and then realises she is still writing about being hungry, she's just doing it a different way. As an only child I used to write stories about people with lots of siblings...
