I actually am not surprised the sequel isn't as good, because I do think the selling point of Deep Secret is Rupert and Maree's epic hatelove something, and it's the sort of thread that holds up the rest of the worldbuilding.
If you haven't read them I recommend the Chrestomanci books! I read them all in one go late last year and loved them.
