Oooo, that was the first DWJ I ever read! I have absolutely no idea what the librarian was thinking letting me have it, I was about ten. As a result I've no sensible thoughts about it, just abiding adoration for the whole thing and overidentification with anyone dealing with Nick pre-coffee, as it's more or less my little sister pre-tea.
The sequel is more allowably YA than Deep Secret, I think, although I'm still not letting the small cousins near it till they're about 14 or so.
