It is a huge nightmare, and American graduate programs do not end being nightmares after applications finish. As someone who started out doing a PhD in the States and transferred to finish at a UK uni, please let me know if I can at all be helpful in offering advice or anything... I consider my years spent in an American PhD program as an awful time in my life I wish I could have back (and I'm an American)...
