So, the much-hyped season finale. Not bad. My main annoyance is very simple. What's the basic plotline? A member of SG-1 acquires information from a highly unorthodox source, information that may well save Earth from a devastating attack by a Goa'uld system lord. In the meantime, Kinsey is attempting to get the SGC shut down.

Sound familiar? At all? Well, There But For the Grace of God was a fabulous, fabulous episode - probably one of my all-time favourites - but rehashing its plot is not necessarily a good thing. But as [livejournal.com profile] hathy_col has said, it's not necessarily a bad thing, either. It just bothered me slightly.

Having said that, the episode definitely had potential. I missed the pre-credit bit, but was in time to see everything from where Kinsey briefed Dr Weir. Whom I think is probably a good guygirl. I will probably be proven horribly wrong, but she never struck me as evil. And she has a good go at Kinsey at the end, which is good.

There were some very good moments. The message from the president - "This is not a joke" - and some absolutely fantastic anti-Bush digs. Jack, talking about Kinsey and Hayes: "Did anyone actually vote for those two shrubs?" and then Hayes, talking about why Kinsey is his vice-president: "He single-handedly won Florida." (Yay for Michael Moore!) Fabulous.

Also, there's a nice bit where first Sam, then Daniel, Teal'c and Hammond independently converge on Jack's house and drink his beer, whilst discussing which of the Simpsons each system lord is most like. There's a nice echo of Children of the Gods, with Daniel's cheap-date-ness. There's also a few echoes of The Fifth Race, for obvious reasons - Jack's having the same problem - including an almost verbatim rendtion of the "Did." "Didn't." "Did." "Didn't." sequence, but that doesn't work as well. It's because the Fifth Race was such a good, whimsical, fun, clever stand-alone - here, the ideas that were so well explored there are being used as a plot device, and it's not so good.

Having said that, though, the moment where Jack sticks his head into the device - can I say, SLASH? Daniel screaming out is just perfect, especially as five seconds before Jack has tried to stop Daniel doing the exact same thing. I liked that, actually; it's just what Daniel would do. In fact, that whole bit where they're by the device is very good.

Let's hope the next part makes it all gel together.

Has dawned on me that hardly anyone will be reading this review. Half of the Stargate fans on my friends list don't have sky, and the others are American!
