Neuraminidase
Jun. 23rd, 2005 04:42 pmFirstly, a rec: Roundabout by
casirafics, which is lovely. Just when the constant stream of nauseating fluff had made me swear off Doctor/Rose, she redeems the entire genre by that much underrated method of good writing.
Secondly, I took my last General Studies exam today. The pre-release was given to us on May 1st, with the advice that "three hours' detailed study" is recommended. Well, I read it. Once. Last night. And I read it again this morning, hail my academic motivation. And I did actually turn up for the exam, take it, write answers to all the questions and even produce a vaguely impassioned essay on the subject of private and public healthcare. That is my contribution.
Thirdly - I don't know why all these points have to be numbered - I came home and revised for three hours straight on Behaviour and Populations. Last year Becca always told the story of a boy at the primary school she was doing her voluntary service, who drew an elephant and labelled it "BIGGG HYOOJ ELEPHANTE."
Well, Behaviour and Populations is Biology module eight and definitely the bigggest hyoojest elephanté module I've had to do. Having just about finished it, and forgotten the beginning of it already, I now need to reacquaint myself with modules one to five. Because tomorrow is synoptic. There is much pain involved in Biology revision.
English is now over, and Chemistry I think will be fine, as I've revised most of it multiple times and just need to finally memorise the reactions of the first series transition metals, again. Politics, on the other hand, is going to kill me dead. I haven't revised it nearly as much as I should have done, and all the revision I have done for it was done weeks ago. I have Saturday and Sunday to revise more than two modules of stuff. I don't think I can do it, hence the killing me dead.
Well, as I've said more than once today, I'll jump off that bridge when I come to it.
Things I have learned today:
-Don't get cardiovascular disease. It's not good.
-Viruses have protein spikes consisting of haemagglutinate and neuraminidase on their lipid envelopes. These are called ligands, but they are not the same thing as the monodentate ligands that form coordinate bonds with transition metal ions.
-The proton nmr spectra of -OH groups always have a singlet peak, because the proton dissociates and neighbouring protons have no time to spin-spin couple with it.
I love how vaguely pornographic that sounds. The poor proton does not get spin-spin coupled with, and presumably wanders off home and sleeps alone, hence the singlet peak.
I did learn more, but will not talk about it because that would be boring. Instead, I plan to go and drink too much coffee and complain about the heat. I do wish these exams were over.
