raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (lost in translation [plush])
A nice, surreal sort of afternoon. Becca called at about three and I went out to meet her, walking through sunshine. The weather is lovely. It's sunny and bright and for the first time this year, I was out without hoodie, coat or other such object. We walked through Southport and down to the pier, and the holidaymakers and tourists were out in full force. I know intellectually that it's all very tacky, but there was just something about the scene; people in sunhats with ice-cream biting through sticks of seaside rock, the merry-go-round and the boats over the marina water, and just the sun that made it so appealing. We walked very slowly, partly because we were early and partly just because. It was just like summer.

We were early, as it happened, and lingered outside chatting about nothing before we went in to see the film. My preoccupation with adverts presents itself even when I'm in the cinema, and does anyone else love Orange adverts? The one about the promotion is fab.

["We need a catchy name."

"It's a two-for-one promotion."

"On films."

"Yeah."

"On Wednesdays."

"Yeah."

"Every Wednesday like clockwork."

"Clockwork. Yeah."

"About films."

"Films. Yeah. And we're Orange."

"Clockwork."

"Oh, I know!"

"Say it...

"Orange Wednesdays!"]

Fab.

But I digress. The film we actually went to see was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. And I loved it. To begin with, I thought it would bore me. But Jim Carrey was as little like himself as possible, which is good, and the story eventually caught me up in it. It was chilly, atmospheric and beautiful, and I loved it. I think there were some extraneous bits, and the structure seemed to be getting a bit sloppy near the end, but it was still beautiful. It had some of the indefinable qualities of Lost In Translation, which was also very good, but I think I liked this one better. The title was enough to convince me.

Continuing the surreal theme, tonight will be strange. My mother and grandmother are going to India at six o'clock tomorrow morning. Accordingly, we all have to get up at half three. I am yet to decide if it is actually worth going to bed.
