Today's thing of joy: a card through the door addressed to the women of the Mousehole (well, actually addressed to "my favourite house of inept lesbians"), containing a collective birthday present, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] jacinthsong and Oxfam. I can say sincerely and happily that it's just what I wanted.

Today's things of slightly less joy: I have exams in two days, my tutors are all out-of-office, the university's website (with, I don't know, past papers, syllabi, other trifles) has been taken emphatically offline, I know nothing whatsoever about anything[2], have not slept in what feels like weeks and my wisdom teeth have chosen this weekend for their biannual Extreme Pain Extravaganza.[1]

...how are you, dear flist? What are you doing today that isn't being fail?

[1] Like the Folsom Street Fair, but less consensual.

[2] Beyond, contracts, they're these things, right, that sometimes need signing and sometimes don't. And the EU, right, it stands for "European Union". It's big and does stuff.

*Yes, I know I got my footnotes in the wrong order, that's because I'm just that fail.

Ooh, did she? *waves at [livejournal.com profile] jacinthsong* Thank you, pet! I.. have yet to buy any presents for anyone. I am fail.

Good things, good things..

-My parents bought me *the best jumper in the world* for my birthday (seriously, it's better than the giant pink monstrosity you saw me leaving the house in yesterday). I shall probably wear it tonight.

- The smell of golden syrup on waffles.

- The bath I am about to have.

-DAVID TENNANT'S LITTLE BELLY.

- You. You are a great thing.

I went on a walk. I looked at the frost and the mist, and I walked out, and I remembered to walk home again.

I a) got up at 8.30 and b) walked around North London for four hours looking at houses and did not at any point cry and run back somewhere with a very large and fluffy duvet. Also, I bought a large pile of books and some knee boots for £12 c/o the Marie Curie shop.

OH GOD IT'S SO COLD

*thinks* So far today, the only thing I have accomplished is to sleep straight through the alarm and therefore rather emphantically not show up for the overtime I was supposed to put in at work today.

... it's past nine o'clock, and I have done nothing which is not fail today. I want to go back to bed.

Oddly enough I went to the Oxfam website and the example they give of the gift being used was in Limpopo, South Africa, which was where I spent nine weeks in the summer of 2007.

Not fail: drank delicious coffee and wrote a week's worth of lesson plans. I'm being a very good teacher and getting ahead on all of the assignment-writing and paper-grading today. (This quarter's crop of students are so funny.)

Later, we go car-shopping... because Jim's car was totalled in a fender-bender involving an inattentive driver crashing into his car at 10 mph in a parking lot, which in itself is fail; but the insurance company taking care of things for us and us getting a better car is not so fail. Silver linings, yay!

Hope your teeth feel better. Sending you good thoughts for exams. You are made of win, not of fail, and you will survive this.

*sends exam passing vibes*

The EU, err, has laws about skimmed milk powder? I feel that this is slightly more interesting than deontology.

i just woke up from a very long and much needed sleep that was very much the opposite of fail. (school started back for me this week, which means that i am back to sleeping for 3 hours at a time.)

and, and, GET YOUR TEETH TAKEN OUT. i am terrified of the dentist however, my wisdom teeth used to do the same thing, and having them removed was very much a good idea. uncomfortable, but worth it in the long run.

*Sends you loads of positive vibes*. Well, I sat down and did some History work today in an attempt to be proactive. I did quite a lot, actually. My best friend got into Cambridge. Things could be worse. x

I have done nothing yet today, as it's 11.45am on Sunday and I woke up at 11.15.

Yesterday I woke up at one friend's house at the top of a giant hill, took two buses to reach another friend's house at the top of a different giant hill, then caught a third bus to have dinner with two more friends who live on yet another hillside (Wellington has many hills, as you will have gathered). My lovely friend S had made me a fabulous chocolate cake for my birthday. Then we watched the first half of the BSG miniseries, which I had never seen and which I enjoyed. Then I caught the midnight bus home (it's always interesting being the only sober person on public transport...)

At all three households, my external hard drive was a welcome extra guest - I like to think that my friends are glad to see me, but their eyes light up in a certain way when I bring along my small metallic friend. There was the exchange of much music, and many TV shows and ebooks. My 500GB hard drive now has *checks* 302MB left on it (eep!), but I'd like to think that it's happy nevertheless.

Oh my god, how is everyone failing SO HARD at being available to help you prepare for exams? That is not your fail, it's theirs.

My not-fail of the day: I am on my break from work, but before I clocked out, I was sitting on the floor with two itty-bitty Aussie puppies asleep in my lap. Aussie puppies, for the record, look like this:

YES.

(Although neither of mine was merle so both of mine looked like the one on the left.)

PS, re: footnote #1: assuming we're talking about the same thing, and I think we must be, I have totally been at the Folsom. Accidentally.

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
PUPPIES. omg, I am JEALOUS. Oh, they are so lovely!

ps. yes, that Folsom Fair! How on earth did you end up there by accident?

[identity profile] gamesiplay.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well. The fair takes up the area on Folsom from 7th to 12th, and the streets all get closed off. I walk from my bus stop around Market and 11th to work at Harrison and 14th. Market is north of Folsom is north of Harrison. And because there are so many street fairs here, I make a point of at least momentarily ducking into every one I pass.

You do the math. \o/

[identity profile] deathbyshinies.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you know what the only thing you, or anyone else, need in order to pass law exams is? Chocolate-covered coffee beans. Serious, I know of what I speak. I will hook you up with some if I see you on Tuesday.

I have been failing to network with academics, and getting horribly patronised by posh white men. In SCOTLAND. In the RAIN. I am made of so much lose and fail.

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, did you just fly halfway around the world and throw yourself straight into conference-mode? I think you did. I think that makes you not fail. Like, NOT.

Chocolate-covered coffee beans are very much win and I agree with you on this point. I think, though, that I may not make it on Tuesday evening - because, I know I ought not to be cramming the night before, but, realistically, this is what will happen. I am really sorry; I did very much want to come and dance.

In that case, I shall send them home with [livejournal.com profile] sebastienne for you ^_^

It's a ridiculous thing to say, I know, but try not to study too hard, yeah? *hugs you*
