More real life stuff

When I got back, Pedar wanted to know, "Who do you know in Savannah, Georgia?"

(He was on a conference there once and thoroughly disliked the place, although it happened to be St Patrick's Day at the time and they dyed the river green, so I don't know what he's talking about.)

I said no-one as far as I knew, which turned out to be true; the postcard is postmarked Savannah but is from Hilton Head in South Carolina. Leigh, I adore you. It's a very pretty card and it's so good to see your handwriting. I'm planning to put all the postcards I have ever received (there are lots and lots off my LJ friends) on my noticeboard when term starts, just to remind me. I might even ask you all to send me some more, I don't know. It's just very nice. And I also plan to walk down to the shore - tomorrow, perhaps - and take some pictures looking out to sea.

Anyway, where was I? Progress with my busy, busy life continues apace; I have finished filling out forms, more or less, and as [livejournal.com profile] jacinthsong has already observed, the most exciting of them is the application form for a Bod card (really, how many times more am I going to type out "Bodleian"? Not many, I fear). For this I need passport photos, and these were done last night with much chivvying along from my mother. The pictures are okay, byt due to a combination of tiredness and bad lighting, I look... white. Not just white as in pale, white as in like a white person. It's terribly disconcerting. I make a ridiculous-looking white person. Still, forms are mostly done, I have doctor's and dentist's appointments all over the place, and I have even had a long chat with Tony (and Mike, but I'm ignoring Mike).

So I am on schedule, and therefore I felt justified in going to visit Jane and Michael this afternoon. We had a very pleasant time chatting about nothing at all and watching QI. Two years ago, Jane was getting ready to go off to Warwick for the first time and asked me to come over, more or less to say goodbye. So I went, and we chatted and I made a now infamous remark she will never allow me to forget, and then I didn't see her for a long while. That month I started sixth form, and I'm now wondering where the time went. It's such a cliché, but where have the last two years got to?

It was a lovely day. The highlight was Michael throwing a Dime down back of the sofa, prompting Jane to go after it. After a moment her voice drifted up. "There's a hat down here! And a copy of Mill On The Floss! And a snake!"

It was a draught excluder snake, but I was amused. I eventually drifted home because my family would be starting to wonder where I was, and Jane gave me a passing-exam present - an anthology of Doctor Who short stories and the vol 3 DVD with The Doctor Dances on it (hee!) - and I'm happy. Also, in an example of synchronicity bordering on predestination, [livejournal.com profile] gwynnega and [livejournal.com profile] cedara both recommended I read Gaudy Night yesterday, and today I saw it lying on the stairs! Jane lent it to me with a promise I'd enjoy it. I plan to spend today and tomorrow just reading. No more forms.

Heh. This is all new and wonderful.

Heeee. That's funny.

Hee! It's certainly lots of fun to read.

Hee. The universe conspires to get you to read Gaudy Night!

Indeed it does! I know what I'm spending my morning doing...

You really, truly should read Gaudy Night. It's wonderful.

And apart from St. Patrick's Day, Savannah, Georgia is actually a lovely city. It used to be my favorite place to go on long weekends (I lived about four hours' drive from there.)

I'm enjoying it thoroughly at the moment.

Many people have commented with love for Savannah, from which I conclude never to trust my father's opinion on anything. :)

I always hated being there for St. Patrick's Day, so I'll cut him some slack there.

congratulations, first and foremost.

savannah, georgia IS truly beautiful.. i love that city. it's a goal of mine to live there someday.

make sure you get an address to me and i'll send you all manner of interesting and completely pointless things to hang on your walls. ;)

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you very much. :)

As I said above, lots of people love Savannah and it's probably only my father in a minority of one. I'd love stuff for my wall! I will of course return the favour, and send you postcards and pretty things from Oxford...

How confusing. You would think they could just send it straight from HH, but apparently not. (Also: I have never spent a prolonged time in Savannah, so maybe it's no good at long stretches, but it's beautiful for a day trip. So charming.)

In any case, I'm happy it got to you. I am still in awe of the postal service. If you ever want a postcard from Gambier for your board, let me know and I'll send you one.

Who wants a postcard from Gambier, though? Maybe if I edited it so it said it was from Gambia?

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed. Postcards sent from here have a tendency to get Welsh postmarks. The delights of the postal system.

See, everyone loves Savannah! Pedar is clearly a minority and I shall have to tell him so.

And I want a postcard from Gambier! I like the sound of the place. And I will send you postcards from Oxford with pleasure.

Savannah is one of the prettiest places I've ever been to. It's old, so old. The city was planned in a square, so there's all these square parks, and they' beautiful at night. Plus, it's very close to the islands off Georgia's coast, which are the most beautiful beaches I've ever been to.

*cough*

Why yes, I do happen to live in Georgia. On the other side of the state!

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
*g* You've convinced me. Apparently my father just attracts doom and gloom wherever he goes. If I ever find myself in Georgia, I shall hunt you down.

they dyed the river green

Savannah isn't far from me (about a two to three hour drive). I can't believe they would have done that; the river is surrounded by protected wetlands and I can only imagine how that would affect the endangered wildlife. It is, however, Georgia so I probably shouldn't disbelieve too much.
