dear yuletide writer

Dear yuletide writer,

I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] singlecrow on the AO3. Thank you very much for writing for me, I will be happy and excited about whatever you write! I am also open to and excited about treats, should anyone wish to write me any.

My general do not wants are violence against women and omegaverse, with a caveat about The Water Outlaws for which see below. But that aside, I read very broadly. I enjoy sad and dark stories, happy stories, love stories, stories with sex in, stories without. I don't do Christmas, so would prefer a story not be entirely about the characters celebrating it, but I don't think that comes up in any of my requested fandoms this year. Other festivals are very good, I like those.

One thing I really love, in sad and happy stories alike, is people being quietly kind to one another. I also really like people being competent, and found families of all sorts.

Fandom-specific stuff follows.

The Saint of Steel - T. Kingfisher
Character: Bishop Beartongue

Oh I love this series. Just love it. Love the romances, but my favourite bit is always the workings of the Temple of the White Rat, its quiet commitment to quirky, hilarious social justice that nevertheless reads like the real work of public lawyers and community organisers. Beartongue is my favourite character in the series, and possibly in fiction. I am a sucker for women in power, especially women in unremarkable administrative power that is a burden to wield. I love her compassion, her cynicism, the way she wields that power always to others' benefit, I love how her religious faith is real and it drives everything she does, I love the paladins and others are starting to sound like her ("No one is here is selling their body before we talk to the Bishop!") and most of all, I love that bit in Paladin's Grace where Stephen describes her as "the nearest he would ever come to true greatness". Honestly, I would love anything about her. A day in her life, a day from her past, how things are going now she's trying to destabilise the economy of an entire continent, something about her friendships, something about her vulnerabilities. (I find it fascinating that Marguerite is the only other character in the series to notice fear or vulnerability in Beartongue - but it doesn't mean she doesn't have them!) My only fandom-specific dnw - I don't want sex and romance in this story; I'd rather it were gen.

(Also, like Beartongue I am a public lawyer, which I mention only because if you want to write a White Rat fic that is Very Nerdy, I am here for that with bells on.)

The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi - Shannon Chakraborty
Character: Amina al-Sirafi

Ah, Amina! This universe is utterly wondrous to me, give me anything in it. Amina is my favourite character and I didn't specify any others because honestly I'd be happy to see her do anything. Some ideas: something about her relationships with her mother and daughter, now that she's a pirate again; team-building as a crew; Dalila teaching her something about poisoning people; anything! One of the things I found funniest and most charming about the book was how Amina really, really wants to be a good Muslim! She wants to serve God. It's just being a pirate makes it hard. I would enjoy anything that explored Amina's relationship with Islam, perhaps in the same very light-hearted way as the book does; this is the woman who married a demon for the sake of casual sex, after all. I'd rather there were no Islamophobia in the story.

The Water Outlaws - S.L. Huang
Characters: Lin Chong, Song Jiang

So in my general dnws I wanted no violence against women, which obviously doesn't make a ton of sense for this fandom. What I mean in this context is violence against women who can't fight back. I don't want any of that in the story but don't have issues with references to Lin Chong's past.

Speaking of Lin Chong, I love her and I want her to be happy. I'd love to see her after the book, finding her way, maybe finding love? I asked for Song Jiang because I thought they'd make an interesting pair, especially when you consider how in awe Lin Chong was of her to start with, and how Song Jiang has learned to respect Lin Chong for herself and not as someone she can push around. I ship it, but they'd work as friends too - complicated, smart friends trying to build a new world together.

Please feel free to bring in any of the other bandits you love, the whole gang are my fave.

That's it! Have a nice time writing it and I will have a lovely time reading it. Thank you again.
