raven: Karen Gillan as Amy Pond, wearing green and red and looking up (Default)

This post is to link from my profile, so it's not particularly relevant right now, but you know. I'm trying to use Dreamwidth more consistently, and I should probably begin by sorting out my profile and whatnot. I think I've pretty much decided to put up with the annoyance and maintain paid time on LJ and DW for the next year or so. After that I'll reassess.

nine things I don't exactly assume you know about me, but might come in handy

1. I'm a writer. All my fanfiction is either tagged (LJ/DW), or at the AO3. I love writing and try to get better over time. (As I started out at thirteen, this was sort of inevitable.) Feedback on my stories is ALWAYS welcome. Whether it's "I liked this" or "there is only one C in 'recommend'" or "actually Kirk is only 25 at the time of the movie" or "wow, the bit with the can-can dancers was an interesting authorial choice", always welcome. If you're interested in seeing where my non-transformative fiction and other published work lives, then drop me a note.

I have just started trying to make vids - those are just tagged for now, pending the AO3 changing their infrastructure a little.

I have been in fandom for sixteen years; my day-to-day involvement varies, but fandom will always be home to me.

2. I grew up in the north of England, read PPE at Oxford and then spent more time than was really reasonable pootling around the city not doing terribly much. I have just moved to upstate New York, which has been a culture shock; I'm still having freak-outs in supermarkets. It's beautiful here, though. Fingers crossed. I lived in Ithaca, NY for a year, and after those initial freak-outs, I loved it. I left the US with a great deal of reluctance and now live in the south of England again.

3. I'm a lawyer, though technically non-practising, and a civil servant. I qualified as a property litigator and am a land lawyer in my soul, it's very embarrassing. I tried a long time to be other things, but it turns out what makes me happy is sewers. Also, foreshore, escheat and copyhold and all the other quirks and contours of the ground beneath our feet.

4. My partner is [twitter.com profile] generalising, who is a good deal more famous on the internet than I am. We live together in a cosy first-floor flat with its own front door, and I love it very much. We have hideous furniture and very forgiving downstairs neighbours.

5. I'm queer, and working ongetting more comfortable with my own queerness over time. Like everything else, it's a work in progress. I'm also not particularly vanilla and sometimes particularly monogamous, but neither on principle.

6. I'm a brown girl. I'm Indian, with Bengali- and Hindi-speaking parents. My origins are simultaneously very important and not important at all - it is all Very Serious, being part of a religious, ethnic and racial diaspora, and at the same time, have you met Indians, we're hilarious. Perhaps because of this, I'm a linguaphile: I speak Hindi (badly), French (worse), and Scottish Gaelic (worse than that).

7. I have chronic sleep disorder, and some mood issues which are either the cause or the effect of said disorder, the jury's still out on that. I've had real problems with this - sleep-deprivation hallucinations and that time fourteen people across two continents had to rally to wake me up for an exam at 1.30pm were only the highlights - but it's a little better now. It's... kind of funny, actually. I have had severe depression in the past, but am (mostly) recovered now. I also have cluster headache, a rare neurological disorder that knocks me flat every couple of years. The inside of my head is just one constant disco.

8. Despite everything above, I am really not a very serious person. I love clothes and make-up, I eat pick 'n' mix rather than meals, I drink an awful, awful lot of pink wine. I love to dance. I probably have more glitter eyeliners than you.

9. Unless you're [personal profile] gavagai.

At this point, all I really have to say is if you have actually written a story with can-can dancers in, I wish to know which one it is.

Re: 6 addendum, I think I will simply continue calling you by your name!

I never have, I think. I think! But I would like to keep the option open. *nods, solemnly*

I love the boldness and the sort of clean approach to sorting out what you want others to know about you. Makes it easier to imagine people instead of blobs of fog.

Also makes me curious to read your writing more. Hope all continues well at Cornell. There should be a few months of stunning beauty and cool air, before the snow comes!

Curious about sleep disorders (writing at 0300 EDT) and your solution. My disorder seems to be an offshoot of type II diabetes - if I eat too much starch/sugar and pass out, I will awake at some increment of 90 minutes in the future (usually 180 min), and then be awake the rest of the night. It was great all those years when I was providing on-call support to the Far East, but now gets a bit old...

I dream of sleeping even half as long as one of my cats...

Thanks - something to think about, and see if it meshes with my other meds.

On a different note - 5)I think you have great taste - she is quite gorgeous!

Here's a question...how much of Bengali can you speak?

None at all, I'm afraid.

I have so much sympathy for the transatlantic relationship thing - last year my boyfriend spent a term at Princeton, and I found it incredibly awful, even though he was only gone for four months. (And, to end this comment on a more upbeat note, I cannot see Karen Gillan without being overwhelmed at how gorgeous she is. How is she so pretty?)

Oh, god, long distance relationships are awful but on the bright side the visits are AWESOME so I would like to take a moment to assure you of that aspect.

I have nothing profound to add other than that I'm glad things are beautiful in New York State, still, and you may or may not be interested to know that right now in a small corner of the north of England there is an incredible gale blowing, the rain is falling and it's dark. At 8.07pm. So, um, hopefully the weather is better where you are?

It is currently thirty-one degrees at 10.25pm. I yearn for gales! And also for visits! But things are still very pretty indeed. :)
